Looking for a camera that’s smaller and lighter–and that still does everything the big boys do? Well, yeah, sure, but, c’mon, get real. Then, check out the Lumix DMC-GF2 Digital Micro Four Thirds Camera (Body) from Panasonic, the smallest and lightest (at time of release) interchangeable lens camera.
This Micro Four Thirds contender is 19% smaller and 7% lighter than its immediate predecessor, but still has a 12.1MP Live MOS sensor, is compatible with the full range of Micro Four Thirds lenses (including Panasonic’s 3D 12.5mm f/12 lens), has dazzling 1920 x 1080 HD video–in short, the speed and customization of an SLR camera in highly portable form.
A bright 3″ 460,000-dot LCD display for composition and review can also be used as a touch-screen for making and changing settings like focus and exposure–a touch on a human face, for instance, switches to the portrait mode and a touch on the background or scenery switches to the scenery mode, while a touch on the subject close to the camera switches to the close-up mode.
Despite its tiny size, the GF2 is packed with photo and video goodies. The My Color mode offers 7 preset imaging effects (such as Retro, Elegant, Cinema, Monochrome, Silhouette, etc.), and also allows users to customize color, brightness, and saturation on the fly. The LUMIX GF2 can record 1920 x 1080 videos at 60i or smooth HD 1280 x 720 movies at 60p in AVCHD. For those looking for better compatibility with computers, the LUMIX GF2 can also record HD Motion JPEG in 1280 x 720 and QVGA, VGA and WVGA. The body supports autofocus during video recording and Movie Program Mode allows for selective depth-of-field control.
Additional features of the DMC-GF2 include a built-in pop-up flash, contrast detection autofocus, integrated dust reduction technology, and high ISO 6400 sensitivity. A lens is not included.

For example, a touch on a human face switches to the portrait mode and a touch on the background or scenery switches to the scenery mode, while a touch on the subject close to the camera switches to the close-up mode.
AF Tracking System
The fast contrast AF focus system has an AF tracking function that makes it easy to take photos of moving subjects by automatically keeping the focus on your subject.
Venus Engine FHD Image Processor
The Venus Engine FHD image processor features exceptionally high performance signal processing capabilities in both photo and movie recording. With the advanced noise reduction system employing the 3D NR and CNR (Chromatic Noise Reduction), users can capture clear, naturally-balanced images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels to help prevent the color bleeding.
Intelligent Resolution Technology
The Venus Engine FHD enables Intelligent Resolution technology, in which three areas–outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation–are automatically detected. Then, the outline parts are enhanced effectively to give edges more clearness while giving a moderate accentuation to the texture areas to look more finely detailed. To the soft gradation part, noise reduction is applied to make it smoother. In addition to the uniform enhancement of sharpness, Intelligent Resolution performs signal processing pixel by pixel, resulting in images that are naturally clear and crisp in both video and photos.
Highly Efficient Dust Reduction System
If dust gets inside the camera when the user changes lenses, it could cling to the image sensor and show up as a spot in photos. The highly efficient Dust Reduction System helps to reduce this risk by placing a supersonic wave filter in front of the Live MOS sensor. Vibrating vertically around 50,000 times per second, the filter repels dust and other particles.
Olympus Prf-d37 – Filter – Protection – 37 Mm [camera] : Protects the Olympus 17mm Micro Four Thirds lens from accidental scratches and filters. Screws directly on to the filter thread of the lens. Can be used with any lens that features a 37mm filter thread.
The Olympus Pen E-P2 with 17mm Lens (silver) is essentially a 4/3-format DSLR minus the prism and mirror housing (hence the smaller body size); images can be composed and edited using the E-P2’s 3″ HyperCrystal LCD, which features anti-reflective coatings on its surface to enable Live viewing of 100% of the image area under the brightest of lighting conditions. When shooting in manual focus, a 5x magnification of the center of the frame pops up as a focusing aid each time you adjust the focusing ring (This magnification can be manually increased up to 10x.). The E-P2 features a port for the optional VF-2 electronic viewfinder or the optional EMA-1 external microphone.
Clad in ergonomically-designed stainless-steel body panels, the Olympus E-P2 takes many design queues from the Olympus Pen F, a popular half-frame SLR that made its initial debut in 1959. But unlike the original Pen F, the E-P2 has the ability to produce vividly-detailed still photographs and HD video with stereo sound, both of which can be enhanced post-capture using the E-P2’s advanced in-camera retouching and audio dubbing tools.
The E-P2 includes a picture mode called iEnhance, which analyzes colors and brightness. The new mode mimics what the naked eye sees. For example, a beautiful sunset looks awesome in person and generally seems to fade when captured in an image. With iEnhance, the warm yellow and orange colors are heightened to be brilliant and closer to the actual scene. The result is exceptionally clear imaging with a dramatically lifelike color. iEnhance can be used in any shooting mode – from program to manual – and automatically engages when in iAuto. This along with the 8 art filters allows you to take perfect, creative images.
Other features found on the Olympus E-P2 include i-Auto mode, dust reduction technology, in-camera image stabilization, which enables low-light hand-held shooting with all 4/3-system lenses, advanced shooting modes, and creative post-capture editing tools.
This E-P2 comes with a 17mm f/2.8 M.Zuiko Digital ‘pancake’ lens, which with an angle-of-view of approximately 62° (34mm equivalent) and a profile of less than an inch, makes for an ideal travel / daytripping camera/lens combination.

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a compact, ergonomically-designed camera featuring a 16.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080p video with notable low-light quality and high-speed performance. The combination of these two technologies enables a high sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600 and continuous shooting up to 8 fps. The sensor also lends itself to an enhanced FAST autofocus system that utilizes a contrast-detection focusing method to efficiently acquire focus with selectable focus areas for even greater precision. Also benefitting image sharpness is in-body 3-axis image stabilization that compensates for angular shifts and rolling camera shake.
Both a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and tilting touchscreen monitor are available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The EVF features a 1,440k-dot resolution and 1.15x magnification for comfortable eye-level viewing with the ability to preview image effects in real-time. Alternatively, the 3.0″ 1,037k-dot tilting touchscreen LCD monitor can tilt upward 80° or downward 50° to suit working from high and low angles and its touchscreen design provides an intuitive means for controlling settings and navigating through the menu system. For refined off-board control and image sharing, built-in wireless connectivity is available and, when paired with the Olympus Image Share app for iOS and Android mobile devices, remote sharing and control over the camera is possible.
Included with the camera body is the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R standard zoom lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-84mm. It features quiet autofocus and zooming operation to benefit recording movies and also incorporates three aspherical elements into its design to reduce aberrations and produce notable image sharpness and quality.
16.1MP Live MOS Sensor and TruePic VII Image Processor
The 16.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor, with Fine Detail Processing II, work in concert to enable high-resolution still imagery, full HD video recording, and notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. The combination of these two technologies also helps to promote high-speed performance throughout the camera system, including a top shutter speed of 1/4000 sec. with a mechanical shutter, a continuous shooting rate up to 8 fps with single-shot AF, and continuous 3.5 fps shooting with continuous autofocus.
Additionally, full HD 1080p movie recording is supported at 30 fps with stereo sound in either the MOV or AVI format. Simultaneous shooting, up to 5 fps, is also possible in P/A/S/M modes at 5.8MP resolution, without interrupting the movie recording.
In-Camera 3-Axis Image Stabilization
In-body VCM (Voice Coil Motor) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake with any lens in use and compensates for camera movements that become especially noticeable when working with telephoto shots, macro imagery, and long exposures. Furthermore, this unique image stabilization system works across three axes, versus the conventional two axes, and compensates for vertical and horizontal shifts (yaw and pitch) as well as camera shake along the optical axis (roll). This range of detected movements serves to benefit traditional still image shooting as well as movie recording and working with moving subjects more effectively.
Electronic Viewfinder and 3.0″ Tilting Touchscreen
For eye-level viewing, a bright 1,440k-dot electronic viewfinder is integrated into the design and features an automatic eye-detect function, 0.007 sec. display lag time, and 1.15x magnification. This finder enables realistic, high resolution viewing in a comfortable position that is especially beneficial when working in bright conditions. The adaptive brightness settings also enable easier viewing in different lighting conditions, with the brightness being set according to surrounding conditions to better simulate the use of an optical viewfinder.
In addition to the viewfinder, a large 3.0″ 1,037k-dot tilting touchscreen LCD monitor is also available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The monitor’s design can tilt 80° upward and 50° downward, making it well-suited to use from both high and low angles. The intuitive touchscreen control offers a range of additional functionality, too, including the ability to touch to release the shutter, select the focusing point, magnify the image, apply filter effects, and navigate through images and settings.
FAST Autofocus System
Benefitting the quickened shooting performance of the E-M10, a contrast-detection focusing method employs 81 AF areas to quickly and accurately acquire focus. Aptly named, FAST (Frequency Acceleration Sensor Technology) is able to home in on subjects using single-shot or continuous focusing methods, as well as AF tracking to benefit working with moving subjects. In addition to standard Small Target and Group Target focusing areas, Super Spot AF can also be used to acquire focus in a smaller, more refined area for critical accuracy.
When working with manual focus, focus peaking and manual focus assist functions are available to simplify attaining precise sharpness, which is especially useful when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
Built-In Wireless Connectivity
By using the Olympus Image Share app, wireless control of the E-M10 is possible through using linked iOS and Android mobile devices. The mobile device can be used to preview compositions, choose a specific AF point, and release the shutter via the intuitive app interface. Linking of mobile devices to the camera is possible through an intuitive QR Code Connect system, which displays a unique QR code on the camera’s monitor which can then be recognized by a mobile device for instant linking.
M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R Lens
Included with the E-M10 is the versatile M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R zoom lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-84mm. Three aspherical elements have been incorporated into the lens’ design to help reduce chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and also contribute to high image sharpness and clarity. The lens is designated as MSC (Movie & Still Compatible), making it ideal for video recording due to its quick and near-silent focusing performance.
